It is a pleasure to meet fellow professionals in the world of entertainment media here at The Root 66. This website represents some of the finest creative talent in the industry here in the Southwest US, and I am delighted to meet all of you!
I recently have become Music Coordinator for Southwest Music Productions, which offers incentives to Los Angeles filmakers to have pre-to-post production music and sound done in New Mexico for films that are made in New Mexico. We are interested in building a community with local filmmakers, musicians and other industry professionals, please become a friend and say "Hi," I would love to find out more about you!
I became involved with the film industry in 1999, during the filming of the award-winning
Pâté (Sundance, 2001), directed by
Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo. My son
Ty was an accomplished actor with an impressive resume by the age of seven, and was a star in the film. As the movie went over-time and over-budget, I took on extended responsibilities ranging from Child Wrangler to PA to Boom Operator, and learned a great deal from Agnieszka and the other wonderfully talented film professionals that worked on that project. Director of Photography
Shawn Kim mentored me and was actually the first person to put a boom mike in my hand.
Being part of a film crew is an exhilarating experience, and through Shawn's mentoring in particular I gained an understanding of the boom operator's role in the film-making process, and a love for working in that role. Over the years I worked on other films, and am currently in the process of gaining full membership with
IATSE Local 480 Film Technicians Union here in New Mexico as Boom Operator, Electrician and On-Set Tutor.
Now, since we are all introducing ourselves: My name is Phil Arnold, and I am a musician. I grew up in a small town in the mountains of New Mexico, and started working full-time as a sideman with bands in Albuquerque at the age of 17. By the time I finished college at Arizona State University (BM Jazz Performance), I was world touring and playing on stages with legendary artists in front of thousands of people on a regular basis. After a couple of years playing the big showrooms in Vegas, I briefly became a cruise ship musician in the Caribbean, where I met my beautiful and intelligent wife Audrey. She became the mother of my two amazing kids, Ty and Kier, who overnight have somehow turned into teenagers.
Audrey and I spent 20 years together in the entertainment gristmill in NYC, I as a jazz musician who recorded, performed on Broadway, Radio City Music Hall, the Rainbow Room at NBC Studios, The Copa Cabana and many other venues with some of the toplegendary artists and bands in the latin and pop world as well as with some of the greatest jazz artists of all time.
As a YAMAHA Artist, I became involved with teacher training in Brooklyn and wound up working with the New York City Public Schools as a music teacher for four years. In 1998 I had the honor of serving on Mayor Rudolph Guiliani's Education Council, and continue to enjoy working as a music clinician and teacher year round with kids from all over the state of New Mexico along with working with bands and my own jazz group.
Audrey meanwhile worked 15 years for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, became Senior Director of Operations and Licensing, and is the smartest person I have ever met. Her specialty is Marketing, and she is rapidly becoming an expert on the many possibilities social media represents for modern business. She currently works with the Bell Group and is coordinator for the Saul Bell Awards, the most prestigious award attainable to professionals and craftsmen in the jewelry industry. I'll try to get her over to The Root 66 to host a webinar on marketing and social media for the film and entertainment industry sometime if people are interested...
