My short bio
I'm an artist, a musician and an animal... I’m a singer/songwriter from South Dakota. I migrated to Central America in 1998 where I began my journey in music and life. I taught myself to play guitar and sing along with the melodies that I played. In 2001 I moved to southern Mexico and began playing live shows at various restaurants, bars and festivals. I have always written my own music, being self taught, I would just make up melodies with lyrics to go along. From San Miguel De Allende to Oaxaca to Guanajuato I continued writing and playing live shows before moving on to my home country in 2006. I moved to Albuquerque, NM where I lived for a couple of years before recording my first album “Morning Afternoon”, which was released in May of 2008 by Swayback Records. I have recently relocated to Portland, OR, where I look forward to exposing my music to a new crowd and finding my spot in the Portland music scene.

Hallie,
My idea is centered around a relationship between a guy and girl, and this would be told in images, driving around in a car, seeing each other at parties, getting to know each other over a period of time, and then they get together and the relationship just does not work, so they become very vicious towards one another...but they remember, through the imagery, just how good they used to be with one another.
This would be shot in two parts. Part one, is you in NM/Santa Fe surroundings, albeit indoors, with good light playing your guitar maybe another musician off in the background or off to your side. We would get several different angles and shots.
Part two would consist of the two actors, and subsequent extras of course, in a series of shots...them getting to know each other, talking, laughing, riding around in a car together...then the developement of their relationship, passionate, deep...and the utter bile that spills from it in terms of fighting and each wanting something different, although this will be a task to deliver visually, but I am trusting my ability to deliver, here.
The sound is fine. I don't think the song should change at all. It needs a fuller, cleaner sound which is all about getting a proper recording and mixing it properly. Your voice, and the words contained therein, are not really very clear in the recording posted on this site. the instrumental is very very minimal, which is good, I like that, but the sound of it can be fuller, better. Even the other instruments playing behind it need to be incorporated and mixed more effectively.
This is what i was thinking, in terms of concept and quality. I know your reluctance to turn your music into what you might see as commercial crap-ola, and believe me, I would not want to compromise the intergrity of your song. I would only want to enhance it for a larger audience, and provide images through a music video to make an intellectual impression on a vast array of minds, not something that is going to go straight to YouTube...or be posted on a site that no one sees.

Hallie,
Mean is a really good piece of music. I have an idea for a music video for it, I had Nick contact you about it because I have been in the midst of producing a film I wrote and just have not had the time. We could shoot this down here, might even be able to bring a small crew up there, if you couldn't come down, but the song spoke to me, and I think you'll appreciate the concept. I am thinking we could make a video that MTV or VH1 would air, and for musicians that want to make money, marketing is always good. Would probably have to re-record and re-mix the track, though, to get a cleaner sound, something worthy of a national audience. I would pay the cost for the production, and for the single to be re-recorded and re-mixed, if you would approve of that, but my producer from Boston, who is worth his salt, would have to oversee in-studio production of the re-recording of the single, because no one around here has the talent to do it properly...Hit me back if you would consider this a possibility.
Peter Dekom, George Lucas' attorney, told me once, "Matthew, when you make the decision to make a film, you are not making a decision to create art, or to entertain, or even to create a product...you are making a marketing decision...". I think this goes for the medium of music as well as for movies, and I would love to produce this concept for 'Mean' and market it nationally on your behalf...Thanks, Matt Massie
