The James Douglas Show, a pioneering band in the genres of alternative soul and new-school funk, is one of many national acts attempting to bring the old-school creative mentality to a new breed of artists. Currently based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, The James Douglas Show has garnered national attention not only because of their ability to entertain audiences of almost every demographic, but also because of their tight and precise musicianship. The James Douglas Show’s music not only appeals to listeners of R&B, funk, soul, and old-school, but the band has also won over fans of pop, blues, rock, and even country!
Formed in 2002, The James Douglas Show quickly gained popularity in the Albuquerque area’s local club scene. By performing a combination of original material in addition to their own energetic arrangements of cover songs, The James Douglas Show’s fan base grew exponentially in the first two years of its existence. The band’s first demo disc, It’s All About You, was a critical success as an independent release. The title track of the album became the band’s first single, and two other tracks, “Am I Losing You” and “Forever,” held the positions of #1 and #2 on MP3.com’s Urban and Adult Contemporary charts. The band toured the southwestern United States, which included a performance at the Urban Network Summit in Palm Springs, California, as well as a performance at Antone’s in Austin, Texas as an opener for Bob Schneider.
In 2006, The James Douglas Show released their highly anticipated and critically acclaimed debut album, Garden City Music, on Bungalo/Universal Records. Songs on the album range from the funky yet sexy “Baby I Know” to the emotional and thought provoking “Remember Me” to the greasy southern jam of the album’s title track, “Garden City.” “Baby I Know” and “Garden City” went on to become singles on Clear Channel radio stations, and are still in rotation on satellite and Internet radio.
Shortly after the release of Garden City Music in 2006, The James Douglas Show became the first and only R&B band to play at the world-famous Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota for the first annual Rock’n the Rally Music Festival. The James Douglas Show shared the stage with such acts as Sammy Hagar, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stevie Nicks, Nickelback, Keith Urban, Big ‘n Rich, REO Speedwagon, .38 Special, Wolfmother, and many others. The following summer, The James Douglas Show also became the first and only R&B act to perform at the Country Jam Music Festival in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where they shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Dierks Bentley, Sarah Buxton, and several others, and performed in front of over 40,000 people.
In 2007, The James Douglas Show signed with world-renowned booking agency, Paradise Artists. Since being signed to the booking agency, The James Douglas Show has performed at clubs and casinos nationwide and has become one of the most sought-after acts in the country. The James Douglas Show was offered the rare opportunity to open for The Whispers on New Years Eve 2007 at the Isleta Casino Showroom in Albuquerque, which became one of the most successful concerts in the casino’s history.
In 2008, The James Douglas Show toured as headliners for the After After Party Tour sponsored by McDonald’s Restaurants and Coca-Cola. The James Douglas Show was a featured artist on the After After Party Music Sampler, which was released by McDonald’s nationwide in March of 2008. A second edition of the sampler is due for release in 2009, and will feature The James Douglas Show along with several of the nation’s up-and-coming talents. Also in 2008, The James Douglas Show made their debut performance at Country Jam and Rcok Jam in Grand Junction, Colorado, as well as a return performance to Country Jam in Eau Claire. They shared the bill with some of the biggest names in music including Carrie Underwood, Poison, Kid Rock, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Jason Aldean, Clay Walker, Dokken, Josh Turner, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Starship, and many others. Currently, The James Douglas Show averages over 120 tour dates per year. The James Douglas Show’s relentless tour schedule, in addition to their uncompromising work ethic and passion for performing, has earned them the reputation as the hardest-working band out of Albuquerque.
On November 4, 2008, The James Douglas Show released their highly-anticipated second album, The New Black. This exciting new album features contributions from some of the biggest names in music, including platinum producer Hector Delgado (Eminem, D12, Andre Crouch, CeCe Winans, Angie Stone), award-winning producer and J.D.S. band member Mike Cee (Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, DMX, Baby Bash), guitarist and producer Pocket (Erykah Badu, Wicked Wisdom), R&B sensation and noted producer A.B., and many others, as well as original compositions from all five members of The James Douglas Show. The New Black marks the band’s second release on Bungalo Records, one of the most noted urban music labels in the world. Some of The James Douglas Show’s labelmates on Bungalo include platinum R&B artist Carl Thomas, legendary singer Patti LaBelle, international superstar Agnes Chan, and soul crooner Rodney Jerkins. Since its release, The James Douglas Show has been a featured artist on iTunes for four straight weeks, and the album has already sold more copies in its first four weeks than Garden City Music sold in two years. The album’s first single, “U,” was also featured on iTunes, and was one of the top five downloads of the year off of the Bungalo label. The music video for “U” is currently featured on YouTube, the music video for the band’s next single, “What About Me,” is due for release in February of 2009.
Following the release of The New Black, The James Douglas Show was selected to tour as an opener for Midnight Star, The S.O.S. Band, Sugar Hill Gang, and others as part of an old school holiday tour, which will run through the middle of December and continue in February of 2009. The band was also a featured opener for comedian Paul Rodriguez during a stop in Albuquerque in November of 2008. The James Douglas Show will return once again to Isleta Casino and Resort on New Years Eve as the opening act for old school legends, The O’Jays. In 2009, the band will return to the road for numerous tour stops across the country, including return trips to the Country Jam and Rock Jam festivals, as well as their first ever performance at the annual NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA.
